Alexandra Sojfer - Paris

Become Parisian chic with a frivolous, frilly, fantastical or frightfully fashionable umbrella (parapluie), parasol or walking cane, handcrafted by Alexandra Sojfer at this parapluie -packed St-Germain boutique, in the trade since 1834.

Some days you want a three-dollar collapsible umbrella, just to stay dry. Other days, you want a blood-red ruffled parasol with a silver handle in the shape of a bulldog's head, say. Or something in turquoise taffeta, festooned with lace and Swarovski crystals, perfect if you're Marie-Antoinette going for a light stroll in the gardens.

For that, you call on Alexandra Sojfer, whose grandfather Georges Gaspard fled Hungary for Paris in 1937 and began handcrafting umbrellas in his atelier.

The boudoir-ish boutique is an experience unto itself. Like the pieces she creates, it's dripping in froufrou detail and umbrellas of every possible shape and texture.

I purchased 3 umbrellas from Alexandra Sojfer's boutique. I bought one that was retractable and two umbrellas that were umbrella/parasol combinations. They were a bit pricey. The retractable one was of violet color but changed colors when wet. It cost 350 Euro. The bamboo handle umbrella was of high quality. I spent 780 Euro on that one. The burgundy one with a silver handle was 550 Euro. They were of very high quality material. The sales lady who assisted me was very helpful and she wrapped and boxed my umbrellas to transport back to the States. I still had more shopping to do in the St. Germain De Pres area so she offered to have it delivered to my hotel. They arrived at the hotel as promised. I use the retractable umbrella but it's held up quite well as I am tough on my umbrellas.

I went to the store mid-July 2013. Love the parasols but since it was my first time there, I did not choose one. The woman who was in the store almost hit me in the heel of my foot with the door when I was leaving. I think I will buy my parasol from someone else.

I purchased an umbrella on my 10/2011 Paris visit, it is extremely well-made and beautiful. I am reminded of Paris each time I use it. Can't wait to buy another in black/white polka dot lining. Alexandra was wonderful, she even offered us an espresso. We made two visits to the shop before I decided to make the investment, yes, it was pricey especially considering the exchange rate but I plan on having this umbrella many more years than the $25 ones that seem to break in a high wind. Mine is a retractable one I can put in my handbag. Prices vary depending on which one you choose. Mine was 185 Euros but that was 18 months ago so don't know current prices. Love my umbrella!

We entered Alexandra Sojfer on our recent visit to Paris and bought a cane/sword for my husband on Saturday, May 26, 2012 and found Alexandra delightful. She was very easy and most efficient. We definitely enjoyed our experience.

I visited this store in search of a very high quality umbrella. While the products appear to meet my needs, she was so incredibly rude that I decided to leave immediately. No umbrella is worth putting up with such an awful demeanor.
